Investment in sea containers – can it bring us savings?

Investment in sea containers – can it bring us savings? Companies dealing in trade and importing any items from outside our country, especially from countries very distant from our country, very often look for alternative logistics solutions that would be able to save on transport, but also increase its efficiency – both in terms of time and in which items reach their warehouses, as well as the safety of the entire process.

It is natural that they start to be interested in something like sea containers, which are simple to build and allow for great flexibility. It would seem that they contribute to huge savings – or always? When will we really benefit from them, and when should we rather refrain from investing in them? We invite you to read our short article that will explain both of these issues.

Sea containers – construction, history and facts about them

Sea containers are something that we have certainly seen in our lives – not necessarily live, but certainly in photos or movies (especially sensational ones), the action of which was set in seaports. It is true that they have been accompanying humanity for a long time, and they enjoy unflagging (or even growing) interest. Here are some facts about them that are worth knowing:

  • The first transport containers (not necessarily sea containers) were created before 1914, and 25 years later they were widely used, primarily in train traffic.
  • There are several ships for transporting sea containers – container ships, semi-container ships and roro ships. The former are the most frequently used, because at the same time the cheapest option.
  • Sea containers are structures of a simple structure, based on a steel frame, surrounded by walls made of the same material, roof and floor, adapted for securing cargo. The most important part of them are the corner posts, which are used to attach, lift and place the container.
  • Sea containers come in many size variants, differing in length, width, but also capacity (expressed in cubic meters or the number of pallets that can be stored in them).
  • There are containers with an open top – but these are not used for sea transport.

Advantages of investing in sea containers

Investing in sea containers, construction and other aspects of which we have presented above can bring a lot of benefits, especially to companies that are developing in a very dynamic way. They include:

  • saving money – transport by sea containers is simply cheaper than any of its alternatives – but only when we use the containers to the full (we can always do it if we play it right; see the next section of the article);
  • simplification of the transport process – thanks to sea containers, we do not have to send our items individually, which greatly facilitates the settlement of the transport service, but also makes it possible for all items to reach us at the same time;
  • increasing freedom – sea containers allow you to transport items of much larger dimensions than those accepted by any other means of transport. In addition, they can also be transported by land – there is no need to reload them at the port, and they can be transported to a storage place;
  • the possibility of establishing business contacts – we discuss this topic in more detail in the next chapter of our article

The use of sea containers and our needs

All the advantages we mentioned above are a reality only when sea containers are used to the limit, completely filling them with items for transport. The smaller their area we occupy, the less profitable for us they will be an investment. That is why it is worth taking care to always optimally manage the transported goods. If we fail to fill the container with them in its entirety, we are not at a loss – we can reach for an alternative solution, i.e. leasing its part to another company. We do not even realize how many companies need to transport a lot of things from China, and it is unprofitable to rely on sea containers, the construction of which encourages their regular use for many years (and not everyone has such great needs).

Summary

Sea containers, construction and all the aspects that we have presented in this article are a great solution for all companies that are looking for savings and their own development in changing their approach to logistics. They can make it not only cheaper but also more effective and, as we have just explained, lead to many collaborations. These, in turn, will certainly have a great impact on the image of our company in the eyes of other companies, often close in terms of the industry.
